Design Principles & Constraints

Based on community research and personal expertise, I established design principles that would guide every feature decision.

Add Image Here** Design principles infographic or mood board showing the balance of function and aesthetics

Core Design Principles:

  1. Artist-First Organization: Storage reflects how artists actually think about and use their tools
  2. Professional Aesthetic: Appearance suitable for gallery openings and client meetings
  3. Medium Flexibility: Accommodates wet, dry, digital, and mixed media supplies
  4. Durability Investment: Built to protect valuable art supplies over years of use
  5. Workflow Enhancement: Design supports creative process rather than hindering it

Technical Constraints:

  • Must fit airline carry-on dimensions for traveling artists
  • Weight limit of 5 lbs empty to allow for supply capacity
  • Materials must be cleanable after paint/charcoal/ink spills
  • Price point under $200 to remain accessible to students and emerging artists

Add Image Here** Constraint analysis showing size limitations, weight distribution studies, and material testing

Ideation & Concept Development

The design process began with mapping artist workflows and tool relationships to inform the organizational architecture of the bag.

Add Image Here** Workflow diagrams showing how artists move through different creative processes and which tools they need when

Organizational Philosophy: Rather than generic pockets, I developed a system based on artist logic:

  • Frequency zones: Most-used tools in most accessible locations
  • Medium separation: Wet and dry supplies never touch
  • Process grouping: Tools used together stored together
  • Protection hierarchy: Most valuable/fragile items in most protected areas

Add Image Here** Sketches and brainstorming sessions showing different organizational concepts and bag configurations

Form Factor Evolution:

  • Traditional briefcase: Too rigid for diverse supply shapes
  • Backpack design: Poor access during seated work
  • Duffle concept: Best balance of capacity, access, and professional appearance
  • Modular system: Allows customization for different artist types

Add Image Here** Concept sketches showing different bag shapes and opening mechanisms

Prototyping & Testing Process

Through iterative prototyping with real artists using real supplies, I refined both the functional design and aesthetic execution.

Add Image Here** Early prototypes made from cardboard, fabric samples, or simple materials showing concept testing

Prototype Evolution:

  1. Cardboard mockups: Testing size relationships and compartment logic
  2. Fabric prototypes: Validating durability and cleaning requirements
  3. Functional prototypes: Real-world testing with actual art supplies
  4. Style prototypes: Refining aesthetic appeal and professional appearance

Add Image Here** Photos showing prototype testing sessions with different artists trying the bag with their actual supplies

User Testing Insights:

  • Artists pack bags differently for studio work vs. location work
  • Left-handed artists need mirror-image organization options
  • Quick-access pockets must accommodate tools with lids/caps securely
  • Artists want to see supplies at a glance without removing everything

Add Image Here** Testing feedback documentation showing user comments, behavior observations, and design adjustments

Material Testing:

  • Water resistance for outdoor painting sessions
  • Stain resistance for inevitable spills and marking
  • Durability testing with sharp objects (X-acto knives, palette knives)
  • Zipper longevity under frequent heavy use

Learning & Reflection

This project reinforced the power of designing within your own user community while maintaining objectivity through systematic research and testing.

Add Image Here** Behind-the-scenes photos of the design process, user testing sessions, or design iterations

Key Insights:

  • Personal experience validates but doesn’t replace research: My own pain points were real but represented only one perspective within a diverse community
  • Function and form are inseparable: Artists value both utility and aesthetic appeal – compromise on either diminishes the solution
  • User communities have sophisticated needs: Artists think systematically about their tools and processes in ways generic products ignore
  • Professional identity matters: How tools look affects how artists present themselves and their work

Design Process Evolution: This project taught me to balance empathy (understanding user needs deeply) with objectivity (validating assumptions through research). The resulting solution serves the community better because it reflects both insider knowledge and systematic design thinking.

Future Applications: The research and design methodology from this project could apply to other professional creative tools – from photographer equipment organization to designer workspace solutions.
